Dr Bell’s Family Centre - Edinburgh

Dr. Bell's Family Centre is a welcoming place where families with young children in Leith can access advice, support and encouragement in a relaxed atmosphere. The charity was set up as a partnership between local people, Edinburgh City Council and NHS Lothian and opened in August 2006 following a five year period of development.

The Centre offers free counselling, healthy eating and cookery classes (see video), group support (Dad's group; Mums group; Asian Women’s Network) and family and one-to-one support.  An affordable crèche facility is provided and there are some free crèche spaces for those accessing other services or those on low income.Other services include employability advice and support and free access to PC's and internet. Services are for everyone, with a focus on the most disadvantaged.

A central part of the community in Leith, Dr Bell's Family Centre has a community cafe open to all.  A number of groups Dr. Bell's logorun from its premises and the Centre works in partnership with Home-Start Edinburgh, Multi-Cultural Family Base and other organisations.  In addition to the day to day activities and services, Dr. Bell's offers a free summer programme with a range of activities including day trips for families who otherwise wouldn't explore local places, offering parents and children the opportunity to connect with nature and with each other. Volunteer placements (including supported volunteering for those with additional support needs) are also provided.
