Community-led resilience - A ‘How to’ Guide
Section 3: Respond
What does community resilience look like in different contexts/situations? In this section, we provide some examples of different scenarios that have happened, and reflections from people who were involved. These include community resilience activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of a major fire, and how the local resilience officer reassessed what was required for shorter periods of disruption, the impact of a gas outage, and the response to a major storm.
These case studies highlight the different approaches taken to specific incidents:
All these examples relate to different emergencies, but there are some common hints and tips that you should be aware of.
Checklist for Response
Monitor credible sources of information (Ready Scotland, SEPA, Local Authority, Police Scotland, MET office, etc.)
First - keep yourselves safe!
Check with your local resilience teams what it would be useful for you as a community to do – remember one of the most useful things might be to keep out of the way and allow the emergency services to do their jobs!
Having checked with your local resilience teams develop your own response and establish regular communication with all other local responders
Support your volunteers to do their bit
Stand down your response at an appropriate time (in consultation with your local resilience teams)
